Where do these Rabbits come from?
I was introduced to a woman Lynette Bunny who recently started raising rabbits as a food source. She happens to live up the road from me so I popped over to her place for an afternoon to take a tour of her Rabbit colony. I had a pet rabbit for a brief time when I was a kit and I actually just skinned my first Jack Rabbit last fall, but I'd never really gotten to hang out and observe the way these creatures move and stretch I've always just seen them hunched over. When we entered the colony the younger adolescent rabbits were hoping all around playing tag, stretching rolling around like a pup while the older Doe's pregnant, laid basking in the sunshine. Next she took me into an inclosure where she pulled out a nesting box with 8 day old baby Rabbits!! My heart melted they were adorable!! So sweet.
She explained the process and timeline of the rabbits life from birth to plate. She is there for every step. I could see the love and admiration, the gratitude she has for her rabbits. It is difficult for her but she understands and witnesses the sacrifice and the energetic exchange. She gives them a good life and in exchange they live happily without threat until they have that one bad day. Nothing goes to waste. All parts of the being are honored.
Rabbit As An Animal Totem: Rabbits have been associated with Fertility, New Life, Recognizing & Releasing Fears, Intuition, Selflessness, Highly Observational with Fast reflexes.
Rabbits are prey animals, they don’t usually live long in the wild. Evolution has granted them the ability to birth several litters a year with as many as 4-7 Kits(babies) per liter. The mothers when nesting will rip fur from their chests to insulate the babies as they are born hairless. Rabbits are social animals & live in colonies most often making their homes within the earth, burrowing vas underground networks with many tunnels & entrances. These are called “Warrens”. They offer safe refuge from predators & potentially harsh weather.
Rabbits can become frozen with fear when they sense a predator is near. When they’ve decided to make a move they will suddenly bolt into action zig zaging in an attempt to confuse & evade their predator.
What can we learn form these animals?
