Some notes on the image: ✨
I created this image “Heart Centered ” from a doe I’d picked up on the road. I was on my way home after having some body work done accompanied by a surprise puer tea ceremony. I pulled over turned off the van, my heart beginning to race I took a deep breath and relaxed as I realized I had just been prepared for her. I was still in ceremony. This was it!
She was still warm when I gently picked her up and put her in my van. I walked along the side of the road off into the meadows to hand pick a bouquet of wildflowers & grasses for the ceremony. When I got her home I laid her down, and began arranging the “still life” image. Witnessing her beauty her body I prayed for her spirit. For the driver who hit her. After making my offerings to her and setting my intentions clearly and whole heartedly I began.
By the time I’d taken her cape off I was feeling too tired to harvest her meat. It was just over midnight, the temperature dropped so I decided to take her body out to the tree line. Making piece with the other forest dwellers, the skunk, coyotes, mountain lion, the bear the vultures. I surrendered to them if they wanted to feast upon her let them.
The next morning my friend came over to work with me on the Sunset Campout installation. She being a body worker shared how she’d wanted to be initiated into the breaking down of an animal. I said let’s go take a look. To my surprise the doe was fully intact, with the exception of a few gentle bites on her bottom hind quarter, amazing so sweet of them to be so gentle.
For the next few hours I showed Ashley hands on how we break down a deer. Afterwards once we’d broken her down and cleaned and cut all the meat we fed her dog lulu and seared some backstraps for us! Over the course of a couple months I slowly worked on creating a drum and three rattles from her hide as a birthday present for a friends partner.
I love this work and am happy to be able to continue to include her in a wider offering and share her story.
